  1. Autocontour Help Information       *

  3. The Autocontour commands are used to
  4. set  the current picture's contour's
  5. heights in a way  that  will  evenly
  6. distribute them amongst the contours
  7.  
  8. You are responsible for choosing the
  9. pen patterns, pattern length and pen
  10. colors.  Autocontour   will   choose
  11. heights  for  your contours.  Length
  12. of pattern affects how  much  detail
  13. is shown in your picture.

  15. To use the Autocontour command,  set
  16. a  pattern  of  pens  in the contour
  17. palette and pull down one of the two
  18. Autocontour menu sub-items.

  20. Detailed explanation of Autocontour:

  22. When you pull down  the  Autocontour
  23. menu  sub-item, MandelVroom performs
  24. the following steps:
  25.  
  26. 1. Count the number of  contours  in
  27.    contour palette.  To do this, the
  28.    program  starts with the righmost
  29.    contour and looks for  the  first
  30.    contour  with  a  pen  number not
  31.    equal to 1.

  33. 2. Calculate the number of pixels in
  34.    your picture minus the number  of
  35.    pixels  that   have  an  altitude
  36.    equal  to  the  MaxIteration  for
  37.    your picture.

  39. 3. Divide the number of pixels  from
  40.    step 2 by the number of  contours
  41.    in step 1.
  42.  
  43. 4. Calculate  a  histogram   of  the
  44.    number of pixels at each  of  the
  45.    possible heights.

  47. The number calculated in step  3  is
  48. the  average  number  of  pixels per
  49. contour.  Using the histogram  data,
  50. the  program  allocates  heights  to
  51. contours from tallest to shortest.

  53. There are two flavors of AutoContour.
  54. The above description describes  the
  55. first  of   the  two  flavors.   The
  56. second  differs  from  the first, in
  57. that, once a given contour's  height
  58. range  is  equal  to  one,  all  the
  59. subsequent contour height ranges are
  60. set to one.
